Snakes On A Plane is the greatest film ever. I have never seen Snakes On A Plane but can assure you that it is great. Some people have questioned why there has been so much hype over a film titled Snakes On A Plane. Those people don't know what they're talking about. "I dont get it," they say. "Is there something I'm missing?" "Snakes can't fly! They'd never make it through security. They're much too impatient!"
If youre one of those doubters, naysayers, or find yourself confused by the entire thing, its obvious youre missing the point and havent seen the magic in the title Snakes On A Plane. Its quite simple. Its a genius title. Just listen: Snakes On A Plane. See? It rolls off the tongue doesnt it?. Its a beautiful title. It sounds like angels kissing.
But why is the title so soothing to the human ear? Maybe it's because you can rest assured that when you enter that theater, the movie you see will be about snakes that are on a plane. It wont be about ponies in space or a mongoose in an SUV. The movie is what it says it is. (Take note politicians, ministers, and car salesmen) For years moviegoers like myself have been misled by vague and confusing film titles like Speed, Click, Zoom, Hoot, and The Discreet Charm of the Burgoise.
The film Dog Day Afternoon, while a fantastic film, has a very misleading title. You see, I am a fan of dogs in cinema. In fact, a big fan of dogs in cinema. (Especially when they talk or solve mysteries!) Dog Days Afternoon has no dogs in it. Not one. I was appalled. Other films have also really burned me too. For example: Shindlers List could have been about anything: groceries, running errands, etc. It was not the productive, feel good film about a man getting things done I was expecting. Million Dollar Baby? It was not the wacky misadventures of a baby with lots of money. Far from it! Brokeback Mountain couldve been a family comedy from the producers of Shrek about the computer animated adventures of a mountain who injures his back in a climbing accident. (It wasnt)
The movie Ray is about a guy named Ray. Cars is about cars. The Broadway musical Cats is about . . . yep, you guessed it: cats. If you want to see cats, go see Cats! There isnt some clever little subplot about architecture or rabbits. Its just about cats!
Now, while 'Cats' is a good title it could still stand to be a bit more specific. Maybe change it to something a bit more honest. Something like "Creepy People Dressed Up Like Cats . . . Who Sing." Much better. Snakes On A Plane ,though, needs no changing. Its perfect just as it is. It says it all: Its about snakes who are on a plane. Samuel L. Jackson, the star of the film, said himself in an interview, You either want to see that or you dont.
Refreshing to see something so blatantly simple, isnt it? And why shouldnt it be blatantly simple? American moviegoers continue to flock to simpler movies that dont make them think, so why should our movie titles make us think too? Its not just a movie title. Its a revolution.;
